BRAZIL - INCLUSION

BRAZIL - INCLUSION

April 28, 2017

Neide and her family are one of the few Afro-Brazilian land owners in the largest coffee-growing region of Brazil, Minas Gerais. Although over half of Brazil’s population identify as Afro-Brazilian, very few own land and have been historically excluded from land ownership. Neide’s husband and his brothers farmed the land as sharecroppers for many years before they were finally able to claim possession of the land. Currently, they farm 45 hectares producing coffee, all of which was sold at low prices to domestic coffee buyers. In 2016, after years of producing coffee beans, Neide underwent training on how to select higher quality beans and conduct better bean processing. By applying her new knowledge to the farm, Neide won the best quality award in her region. This will help make her farm more profitable and open the door to direct trade export markets.
